What is a ReStore?

A ReStore is a store that accepts donations of new and gently used furniture, building materials, appliances, and other household items from individuals and businesses in the community. The ReStore then sells those items to the public at a reduced cost, usually 30-70 percent off the original retail value. All proceeds go toward building Habitat homes with the local Habitat affiliate.

Who benefits from the ReStore?

Customers - Save 50%-90% off retail prices on building materials, furniture, and appliances of all kinds.

Donors - By donating new or gently used building materials, furniture, and appliances, you can help improve our community while receiving a tax deduction.

Environment - Whether you buy or donate materials, you are reducing the amount of usable building materials being deposited into a landfill.

Community - The proceeds from the ReStore will help to build additional Habitat homes for families in Richland, Lexington, and Fairfield counties.

Our Mission

Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a facility that supports the services provided by its local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.  Income generated from the project goes toward expanding the building programs of Habitat for Humanity, serving to eliminate poverty housing.

The ReStore recycles overstocked, seconds, used, discontinued items and salvageable building materials donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals.  These donated items are used in two ways: first to build simple, decent houses for low-income families serving the Habitat for Humanity mission, and also to be resold to the general public to finance our building projects.  The ReStore considers itself a Green organization, vowing to operate in an environmentally responsible manner.

Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity describes the purpose of their ReStore as a support of the global vision of Habitat for Humanity through the recycling of building materials and other items.  This is done mainly in four ways:

1)    Environmental – being good stewards of valuable natural resources, recycling and reusing useful materials
2)    Economic – reducing landfill disposal costs, providing inexpensive materials for home revitalization, aiding those of all incomes to improve their housing situation
3)    Social – providing volunteer opportunities and programs that promote community involvement
4)    Partnering – serving as a financial partner in the construction of Habitat homes while also providing useable materials for the construction of its homes

The reuse of materials is an environmentally-friendly option as it cuts down on the use of landfill sites.  It reduces the amount of non-renewable resources being consumed while benefitting the surrounding community. Tax rates may even improve from extending the life of landfills.  Donors can reduce disposal fees, benefit from tax deduction on donations, and get rid of unneeded items. Donating also clears space and saves on storage costs.  The benefit of the ReStore reaches all corners of the community.
